8. Wet and Dry

  • Islands - George Mackay Brown, & St. Kilda

Islands have their own special geographies.

One of the most evocative words in geography is archipelago.

Some islands are shaped by their histories.

Some are connected to particular people.

George Mackay Brown was synonymous with Orkney.

St. Kilda

This is a place that has been calling to me for many years.

I hope to get there one day, and walk the street(s) of Hirta.

A recent Geraldine McCaughrean book is based in the archipelago.

  • Dry spaces

Drought and changing places.

Cape Town: changed by the experience of the East Cape Drought, and the issues with the city's water supply.

Will also consider the changing issues with cities which are fed by glaciers which are melting.

And finally, spaces which are currently dry, but with increasing sea level may become wet, or island archipelagos.
