Session 2

We begin by being lost.

  • Rebecca Solnit and the role of maps

  • Mental maps

  • Atlas of Experience

Why is it important to get lost in a new place?

Rebecca Solnit has written on the theme of getting lost in a place.

Discussion on the value of wandering - the dérive / psychogeography - the work of the flâneur - is it possible to organise a fieldtrip locally and to actually get the students 'lost'?  I remember our teachers getting us lost up on Kinder Scout in the mist when I was younger, although they reckoned they knew where they were.

Mental Maps as way of representing the place

Add a new 'node' through getting lost

Represent a place using the ideas in the classic book, 'The Atlas of Experience' which is sadly out of print.

READING

'Trace' by Lauret Savoy explores ideas relating to place.

The Atlas of Experience - second hand copies are available via Amazon and other bookshops. For a while, I used to buy copies whenever I saw them as they make excellent gifts for geographers.
